Saltaire is outside Bradford and close to Shipley in West Yorkshire. It is the finest example in England of an integrated textile mill with its associated houses, public buildings and planned open space. Saltaire is the most complete model village to be built for the textile industry during the first Industrial Revolution and has survived virtually intact. Developed from 1850 onwards, Saltaire illustrates the integration of industrial processes, transport and the use of steam power with the provision of model housing and social amenities for the community.
Saltaire was designed with a uniform architectural style and provided a model for resolving the problems associated with rapid urbanisation. It represents a significant step forward in the art of urban planning and is the first known example of 'planned' dispersal. The development of Saltaire reflects the self-confident, technical flare associated with social philanthropy and civic pride that was evident during 19th Century England.
